How to Read GSM: A Buyer's Guide to Fabric Weight

What GSM Actually Measures

GSM stands for grams per square meter — the mass of a one-meter-by-one-meter piece of fabric, cut and weighed flat. It’s the single most common spec on a fabric ticket, and for good reason: it’s cheap to test, easy to compare across mills, and a decent shorthand for “how substantial does this feel in the hand.”

But GSM is a weight measurement, not a performance measurement. Two fabrics can share the same GSM and behave completely differently on a garment.

Why the Number Alone Can Mislead

A 180 GSM single jersey and a 180 GSM interlock knit will drape, stretch, and wear very differently, even though they weigh the same per square meter. Yarn count, knit structure, and finishing all move the “feel” of a fabric independently of its weight. A brushed fabric can read heavier in hand than its GSM suggests; a compact, high-density knit can feel sturdier than a loftier one at the identical number.

This matters most when you’re switching suppliers. If a buyer specs “180 GSM, matches current supplier” without also locking down composition, knit structure, and stretch percentage, the replacement fabric can pass the GSM check and still fail on the sewing floor — puckering seams, different hand-feel, or a garment that fits differently after wash.

GSM Ranges by Product Type

As a rough buyer’s reference:

  • 120–160 GSM — lightweight tees, summer layers, liners
  • 160–200 GSM — everyday activewear, yoga bottoms, polos
  • 200–260 GSM — structured leggings, outerwear shells, compression wear
  • 260 GSM+ — heavyweight fleece, thermal base layers

These bands aren’t hard rules — a technical compression fabric at 190 GSM can outperform a loose knit at 240 GSM for the same use case. Treat GSM as a starting filter, not a final answer.

What to Ask Your Supplier

Before locking a fabric spec, ask for the GSM tested on finished (dyed and washed) fabric, not greige — weight shifts during dyeing and finishing, sometimes by 5–10%. Ask which standard was used (ISO 3801 and ASTM D3776 can return slightly different numbers on the same roll). And ask for a physical swatch alongside the number — GSM tells you the weight, but your hand will tell you everything the spec sheet leaves out.
